The Ballard Group has performed design services for numerous religious worship facilities of a variety of faiths. These projects are primarily renovations and additions to existing buildings, although some are new building facilities. Owners of these buildings are often a committee of volunteer members of the congregation with varying levels of understanding regarding construction procedures and technology. It is the Design Team's responsibility to not only design a quality facility, but also to assist these Owner Committees to understand the ramifications of decisions pertaining to building systems.
52,000 square foot renovation of the former St. Thomas Seminary located in Denver. The building is a designated historical structure, and is the headquarters for the Archdiocese of Denver. The design includes the complete redesign of mechanical systems to provide heating and air conditioning. Due to the tight structural limitations, extensive coordination was required in order to route mechanical systems throughout the building in an unobtrusive manner.
8,700 square foot total church addition and remodel to an existing 14,000 total square foot facility. Remodeled areas include the 3,000 square foot administration building as well as a minor remodel to existing parish hall, which facilitated the addition of a 5,000 square foot gymnasium adjacent to the parish hall.
Addition of a new three-story, 13,725 square foot Christian Education Center. This building will also house the Administration functions of the Church as well as the Chapel.
18,000 square foot, three story addition to the existing church building, which primarily consists of classrooms for a parochial elementary school.
We have been associated with several projects at this facility. The Parish Center was complete a number of years ago. In about 1997, we re-designed the base church HVAC systems to add cooling to the Sanctuary building. In 2005 we designed a remodel and building addition that included modifications to the Altar area, the addition of two new gathering entries and the construction of an Adoration Chapel. The Adoration Chapel uses in-floor radiant heat and has concealed HVAC systems. We also designed a new cooling system for the Gym located in the Parish Center. This project was completed in 2007.
Completed 1998; 2007
Mechanical systems update to the existing 18,700 square foot facility and 2,000 square foot addition of a new Adoration Chapel.
19,325 square foot Synagogue with a worship center, classrooms, and administrative functions. Project includes a kosher kitchen, library, social halls and two mikva’ot, or ritual baths. The systems include constant volume rooftop units, gas fired make-up air units, unit heaters and the immersion pool water delivery and heating water systems. The mechanical systems are controlled by electric controls.
Several projects have been completed at this facility between 2000-2008, including a recent major addition completed in 2007. The projects include a classroom addition for the associated church school, a ministry meeting room, a balcony expansion of the Sanctuary to accommodate an additional 900 people, and the recently completed Atrium project. The 2007 addition was approximately 25,000 square feet of space ranging from a high volume gathering and performance area to conference rooms and ministry offices.
Final project completed 2008
15,825 square foot new church. We were initially hired to perform a Peer Review and take over the Construction Administration for the previously designed new church because the mechanical engineer was no longer associated with the project. However, during our review we discovered that the quality of the mechanical design was incomplete. The Ballard Group re-designed the HVAC system for permitting & construction of the completed building.
Assessment of mechanical and plumbing systems in the existing 8,500 square foot building with recommendation of multiple options for the church to consider for new construction as well as remediation to correct existing issues.
6,000 square foot single story addition to an existing 4,655 square foot single story church + 4,290 square foot basement. The existing sacristy and connecting link were demolished for the construction of a new sacristy, office space and new restroom facilities between the nave and the existing parish hall.
18,000 square foot single story Nave, Narthex and Main entry addition to the existing 28,450 square foot church for a new footprint of 46,450 square feet. Some interior portions of the existing building, including the basement, were remodeled to accommodate the new addition.
